Sunscreen
The best way to protect yourself from the strong UV rays is by wearing and reapplying sunscreen. Laguna Beach is a Marine Protected Area (MPA) home to a variety of kelp reefs, tidepools, and marine animals. In order to preserve Laguna’s gorgeous oceans, make sure your sunscreen is reef-safe if you plan on going for a swim.
Reef-safe sunscreens contain mineral UV-blocking ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and are free of harmful toxins like oxybenzone and octinoxate. To see if your sunscreen is reef-safe, check the active ingredients or click here for reef-safe sunscreen recommendations from Save the Reef.
Physicians recommend wearing a minimum SPF of 30 each day and reapplying every 2 hours. It is important to take extra precautions during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. when the UV rays are strongest. In Laguna Beach, the UV index can reach extremes of up to 11 during the summer months. Through September 10th, dogs can only be on the beach before 9:00 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m., which is perfect for beating the heat!
Shade
Having shade available can reduce over-exposure to the sun during long days outside and prevent heat related illnesses. If you are planning to bring an umbrella to the beach, it must be less than six feet tall and six feet wide to follow City of Laguna Beach regulations.
Shade must comply with these requirements so that lifeguards have an unobstructed view of the ocean at all times. Tents or umbrellas that are too tall interfere with lifeguards’ ability to rescue swimmers and keep everyone safe. On days with windy conditions, be sure your umbrella is secured tightly in the ground to prevent it from blowing away and hurting anyone.
Sun safe clothing is another way to protect yourself from the sun’s harm. Sunglasses and hats are a great way to shield your eyes, scalp, and face from the bright rays in style.
Staying Hydrated
It is important to drink plenty of water throughout the day as the sun causes dehydration quicker than being indoors. Bringing a large, reusable water bottle on your outdoor adventure will ensure you have cold water on hand at all times. An easy way to make sure you stay hydrated is to drink 8 ounces of water for every 30 minutes in the sun.
Leave No Trace
Always remember to practice our Leave No Trace policies when visiting beaches and trails. Never leave any plastic water bottles or empty sunscreen containers behind and make sure to properly dispose of any trash you produce while outside. If you set up an umbrella on the beach, be considerate of others around you and make sure to share the space. Finally, a friendly reminder that Laguna Beach is smoke-free in all public areas.
Enjoy!
The warm weather in Laguna Beach calls for fun days in the sun all summer long. Knowing how to protect yourself and stay safe outside will make the summer months even more enjoyable this year.
